Do I Need To Track My Miles?

Do I need to track my miles?

The answer is a resounding "Yes!", you need to track your miles! There are several apps that can help you track your miles, or you can simply use a pen and notebook. Regardless of which method you take, you are still required to have documentation of the miles driven. Do not tell your tax preparer, “Use the same miles from last year’ or take a random number. The IRS doesn't play games and you shouldn’t either. Tracking miles doesn't have to be complicated. We've compiled a list of things to look for in an app and suggestions to get you on the right track!

What should you look for in a Mileage Tracking App:

  1. It has to be one you will use every time you are in the car.

  2. What automation does the app offer? Will it automatically track where I am going or do I have to click “go”?

  3. Does the app integrate with my accounting software? Do you need for it to? This is a fancy feature and not necessary, but if you put a lot of business miles on your vehicle you may really like this feature.

  4. How easy it for me to run reports? You need to easily hit a button and have a completed report in your hands. Whether your app syncs with your accounting software or not, you will want a report that is IRS compliant for your records. Most people will need to email the tax preparer their mileage at the end of the year, this should take seconds to do.

  5. What additional features are included? Every app has additional features, but make sure they will be features you need. Some people want to dig deep into their numbers and would find an insightful tool beneficial. Ask yourself, “Will I actually use this cool feature?”
